From the desk of Sheriff Bryson Meyers:
The Garrett County Sheriff’s Office is aware of a recent scam where the scammer identifies themselves as a deputy, an employee with the Sheriff’s Office, or another government official, claiming that the individual missed a court date and a warrant has been issued. The scammer then asks for Venmo or PayPal information to clear the matter.
Residents should be aware that the Sheriff’s Office does not make such calls and will never ask for payment of any kind. Telephone scammers often try to hook you with enticing offers, appeals for charitable causes, or claims of being associated with the government. They won't allow time for you to think through their pitch. They will pressure you to make a decision.
Citizens are reminded to use caution when dealing with calls of this nature and to immediately discontinue the call and stop talking to the scammer.
