Grant Funds 3-D Laser Scanner Equipment

The Sheriff’s Office recently obtained a grant through BJAG and FEMA to purchase a FARO 3-D laser scanner which will be utilized by the Criminal Investigation Division, Crime Scene Investigator, and Accident Reconstructionist, to photograph and recreate crime scenes and vehicle accidents for investigations and court prosecution.

The FARO can quickly and accurately collect millions of measurable data points at a crime or accident scene. These measurements are stored for later analysis, and the data can be transformed into a model of the scene exactly as it was at the time of capture. Prosecutors can then walk the judge or jury through the scene using a 3-D model to show exactly how it looked at the time of the incident.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division, Crime Scene Investigator, and Deputies assigned to the Accident Reconstruction Team, completed a 3-day training with the FARO and incorporated the agency Drone to create scans and 3-D models of motor vehicle accidents and crime scenes. Sheriff Meyers stated that this new technology will greatly enhance the way the Sheriff’s Office documents major crime scenes and vehicle accidents and will better prepare investigators and prosecutors for court trials.
