On March 29, 2025, around 9:30 pm, deputies stopped a vehicle in the area of Friendsville Road and Garrett Highway for traffic violations. During the course of the traffic stop, a State Police K-9 was utilized and conducted a scan of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert. A subsequent search of the vehicle and occupants resulted in the recovery of approximately 3 grams of Fentanyl and paraphernalia. As a result of the search, Detectives with the Narcotics Task Force arrested and charged the driver, Eugene Wayne Shiflett, 60 years old, Mountain Lake Park, with Possession of Fentanyl, and the passenger, Gary Edwin Friend III, 39 years old, Oakland, with Possession of Fentanyl and Possession of Paraphernalia. Both Shiflett and Friend were transported to the Garrett County Detention Center, where they are currently being held awaiting a bond hearing.
